The unit is the Hertz (Hz). It simply means "cycles per second".

If a drummer beats a drum 5 times in one second, the frequency of the drum beat is 5Hz. The electricity in our wall sockets in Nigeria alternates at 50Hz, meaning the current switches direction 50 times every second!
