The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of chemical elements organized by their atomic number, electron configuration, and chemical properties. Elements are arranged in rows (periods) and columns (groups). Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties. The table was first developed by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, and it has since become one of the most important tools in chemistry for understanding relationships between elements.
