What is the difference between Position, Distance, and Displacement?

Let's picture a trip from your house to the market.

Position is just where you are at a specific time.

Distance is the total ground you covered. If you walked to the market (1km) and walked back home (1km), your distance is 2km.

Displacement is how far you are from your starting point in a straight line. If you walked to the market and back home, your displacement is 0 because you ended up exactly where you started! Displacement is a vector; distance is a scalar.
