Everything has a natural frequency at which it likes to vibrate. If you force it to vibrate at exactly that frequency, the vibration gets HUGE.
This is resonance. It is how you swing higher on a playground swing by pumping your legs at just the right time. It is also why soldiers break step on bridges—to avoid resonating the bridge to collapse!
