Newton's First Law of Motion, also known as the Law of Inertia, states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force. This means that objects resist changes to their state of motion. For example, a ball rolling on a flat surface would continue rolling forever if there was no friction or air resistance to slow it down.
