An electromagnet is a magnet you can turn on and off. You make one by wrapping a wire around a nail and connecting it to a battery.
They are super useful. Electric bells work by turning a magnet on and off very fast to hammer the gong. Large scrapyards use giant electromagnets to lift old cars.
