A fuse is a sacrificial hero. It is a thin piece of wire designed to melt ("blow") if the current gets too high.
If there is a power surge (common with NEPA/DisCos!), the fuse blows and cuts the circuit before the high current can destroy your expensive TV or fridge. It gives its life to save your electronics.
