A chemical bond is a lasting attraction between atoms that enables the formation of molecules and compounds. There are three main types: ionic bonds (transfer of electrons between atoms), covalent bonds (sharing of electrons between atoms), and metallic bonds (electrons shared among a lattice of metal atoms). Bonds form because they result in a more stable arrangement of electrons than in the separated atoms.
