What exactly is an algorithm and why does it sound so complicated?

I understand why that word sounds intimidating, but think of it like a recipe for Jollof Rice. If you want that perfect party Jollof, there are specific steps you must follow in a specific order, right?

An algorithm is simply a step-by-step instruction to solve a problem. In my physics days, we used them to calculate planetary orbits. Today, you use them to decide which route a Danfo should take to beat Lagos traffic.

Don't let the big words scare you. If you can explain how to tie your shoes or how to make pap, you are already thinking in algorithms. We just translate those steps into a language the computer understands.
