Vectors are tricky because you cannot just add them like normal numbers (3+4=7 is only true sometimes!).

If you walk 3km North and then 4km East, you are NOT 7km away from home. You form a triangle, and your displacement is actually 5km (using Pythagoras theorem). In physics, direction always matters.
