A Vernier Caliper is a tool used to measure small lengths very accurately, much better than a normal ruler. It has two scales: a main scale and a sliding "vernier" scale.
To read it: 1. Read the main scale where the zero of the vernier scale sits. 2. Look along the vernier scale to find the line that matches up perfectly with a line on the main scale. 3. Add that small vernier reading to your main scale reading. It takes a bit of practice, but it is standard for engineering work.
