Shadows prove that light travels in straight lines (rectilinear propagation). Light cannot bend around corners easily.

If an opaque object (like your body) blocks the path of light, a dark region is formed behind it. That is your shadow. Note that transparent things (like clean glass) don't cast dark shadows.
